Mental Health & Addictions Crisis Calls: Effective May 2, 2022 services traditionally offered through the Provincial Mental Health Crisis Line will now be provided by the 811 HealthLine. Individuals in need of crisis response or mental health and addictions support can simply dial 811, day or night, to speak with a registered nurse who is a trained crisis intervener.

Nurse Practitioner Virtual Care Service: This service can prevent unnecessary emergency room visits for non-emergent issues. Appointments are available everyday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., including weekends at no cost to any individual. The nurse practitioner can communicate over the phone or through videoconference. Individuals can book an appointment by calling 811 or using the 811 NL HealthLine app, free through the Apple and GooglePlay app stores.

Dial a Dietician: Dial a Dietician offers evidence-based healthy eating advice and is delivered by local dietitians by calling the NL HealthLine 811 or emailing a dietitian on the 811 HealthLine website. Dial-a-Dietitian connects residents directly to a dietitian; No referral from a health care provider is needed.  This service is available 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

If you use “Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)” or web-enabled telephone services like Canada VRS, Skype or Google Talk, 811 may not connect. Instead, call 1-888-709-2929 to reach the HealthLine. Out of Province cell phones will not connect to 811. Please use a landline.

Text option in the 811 HealthLine app is available ONLY for use by Deaf or hard-of-hearing callers and persons with communication difficulties who live within Newfoundland and Labrador. Mental Health and Addictions triage is a process to provide quick assessment and timely access to an appropriate mental health and addictions health professional.  Central Health's health professionals have backgrounds in social work, occupational therapy, nursing and psychology. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a comprehensive, evidence-based treatment that works to provide a balance of acceptance and change using validation, problem solving and behaviour change strategies. DBT strives to help people acquire, strengthen and generalize new skills. Comprehensive treatment consists of weekly individual therapy sessions, a 24-week skills group, a consultation team for therapists and the availability of coaching calls to assist with skill development if necessary. This province-wide, toll free number (1-888-709-7090) will detect the region where the caller is located and immediately connect them with one of ten transitions houses that are part of the Transition House Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Doorways provides rapid access to mental health and addictions counselling services ‘one session at a time’. While most locations offer a drop-in service, some locations provide same-day, next day, or appointments by phone. Drop-in counselling services are available without an appointment or referral.

If further counselling is required, staff will work with you to provide access to additional services and supports.

Doorways is not an emergency service. In a medical emergency, call 911. In the case of a mental health or addictions crisis call 811, or proceed to the nearest emergency department.

The Eating Disorder Inpatient Program (EDIP) is a four-bed inpatient eating disorder unit at the Health Sciences Centre.  This program provides inpatient services for adults 18 years and older with eating disorders whose restrictive eating and/or compensatory behaviour (purging, over exercising, laxative use) place them at high risk  for medical complications.

The Friendly Calls program is a free phone program that is available to any adult 18 years and older who maybe experiencing loneliness and isolation. The program pairs a trained Red Cross volunteer with an adult (18+) who may have limited social and family connections or feels they could benefit from more social interaction over the phone. There is no cost to participate and if the person decides it’s not a good fit for them, they can cancel at any time.

This is an inpatient unit to serve clients over the age of 65 who require assessment, treatment, and diagnoses for a new onset of a psychiatric illness or new onset of cognitive decline. The unit also provides assessment and treatment for clients of any age who have a diagnosed dementia with challenging psychiatric or behavioral symptoms. Prenatal nutrition and education support program offered through community-based Family Resource Centres. The objective is to support healthy nutrition during the pregnancy and early post-natal period and to promote healthy pregnancy and newborn outcomes. Healthy Baby Club actively supports healthy lifestyles for people who are pregnant using a peer support model with a team approach. Support is offered to the participants by a resource mother or other healthy baby club staff, as well as other club participants. Staff work closely with the other family resource centre team members, the public health nurse and the regional nutritionist to provide prenatal education and support.

NL Housing is a provincial Crown Corporation which operates under the authority of the Housing Corporation Act. It is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor in Council. The Board represents different geographic areas and interest groups and reports to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador through the Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development and Minister Responsible for the Newfoundland and Labrador. NL Housing's clientele consists of individuals and families with low-to-moderate incomes who require assistance in accessing or maintaining safe, adequate and affordable housing. The programs delivered serve renters, homeowners, those at risk of, or who are experiencing, homelessness and distinct populations whose housing needs are particularly acute, including persons with disabilities, persons with complex needs, seniors, youth, victims of intimate partner violence and Indigenous persons.
NL Housing offers a diverse range of programs across the housing continuum to meet the needs of clients, including:
• Operation and maintenance of the Corporation's 5,575 public social housing units throughout the Province to over 12,000 low-income clients.
• Partner-Managed Housing Program that provides financial and technical support to partner-managed and cooperative housing providers offering subsidized housing to over 1,600 low to moderate income households throughout the province.
• Rental Supplement Program that provides rental assistance to low-income households in private accommodations which assists over 2,000 lowincome individuals secure affordable housing.
• Home Repair programs that provide financial assistance to over 1,400 low-income homeowners to complete much needed repairs to their homes, improve accessibility or to make energy efficiency improvements.
• Supportive Living Program that provides grants to non-profit organizations to provide services and supports or build community capacity towards addressing and preventing homelessness. In 2019-20, this program funded 22 partner organizations to deliver 28 projects across Newfoundland and Labrador, supporting over 5,000 individuals.
• Emergency Shelter Program which manages a 24/7 toll free number to support individuals experiencing homelessness. NL Housing engages a range of non-profit and private shelter operators to respond to required emergency shelter placement for individuals experiencing homelessness and connect them to supports to secure permanent housing as quickly as possible. In 2019-20, over 1,000 individuals accessed services of this program.
• Transition Housing Program that provides funding to the Province's 10 transition houses to provide safe short-term accommodations, services and resources to support women and their children who are vulnerable for, at risk of, or have been subjected to intimate partner violence. In 2019-20, there were almost 850 admissions to this program.

Perinatal Program Newfoundland and Labrador (PPNL) is a province wide program that establishes guidelines for perinatal care, provides education to health care providers, advocates prevention and health promotion, supports research and quality assurance initiatives, and provides decision makers and researchers with information form its databases.

Nobody’s Perfect (NP) is a nationally recognized parent support and education program for parents of children from birth to age five. It is a free and voluntary parenting program designed to meet the needs of parents who are new, young, single, socially or geographically isolated or who have low income or limited formal education offered in community Family Resource Centres throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.  As a strengths based program, it works with parents where they are, is based on what parents want to learn about while giving you and your child a safe place to meet others with children of the same age and with whom they share interests & concerns.  Programs are offered in person and virtually.

Psychiatric emergency services are available in any emergency department.  The emergency department is staffed on a 24-hour basis.  A health professional, such as a Doctor or Nurse, assess all patients who present with mental health and addiction concerns.  The department also has access, when needed, to 24-hour, on-call coverage by a Psychiatrist or psychiatric staff.

The Recovery Centre in St. John’s is open to anyone in the province who is 16+ and needs help while withdrawing from alcohol, drugs and/or gambling.  (You may remember this service as “detox”, but things have changed).  We now have around-the-clock nursing support and can provide medication to help with your withdrawals as needed.  Once you start to feel better, we have a counsellor and meetings to support you as you begin your recovery.

The Grace Centre is a provincial inpatient addictions treatment centre for adults aged 18 years and older. It is a voluntary program for individuals who require a more intensive, structured program than can be provided on an outpatient basis.

The program consists of a 28 day treatment service that is holistic in nature and addresses the individual’s physical, social, psychological and spiritual needs through individual, group and family counselling. An extended stay may be available for extenuating circumstances.

The centre is staffed with a multidisciplinary team consisting of a physician, nurse practitioner, nursing, social worker, recreational therapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, psychology and non-clinical support staff.

Tuckamore is a live-in treatment Centre for 12 – 18 year olds in the Newfoundland and Labrador who have complex mental health concerns. Tuckamore is located in Paradise and the average length of stay for young people is between 6 - 12 months. The program includes individual, group and family counselling as well as life skills training, recreation, and art and music therapy.  Tuckamore provides a safe home-like environment, a school area, a multipurpose room, a physical fitness area and an apartment for family visiting overnight. You can also ask your physician, nurse, clinician or social worker about other supports for youth in your area (ie. counselling). If Tuckamore is right for you, they can help with a referral.
